WERNER BLOWS PAST FIELD TO WIN CDGA SENIOR AMATEUR

CHICAGO - They don't call it the Windy City for nothing, as the field of the 16th CDGA Senior Amateur Championship learned this week. In the event's first visit to the city proper at Ridge Country Club, the field was greeted with sustained winds of 25-35 miles per hour and gusts as high as 45 miles per hour. In the end, it was Terry Werner of Dyer, Ind.—a member of Briar Ridge Country Club—who blew into town and stole the show, besting John Finnin (Mokena / Olympia Fields CC) 3 and 2 in the final match on Thursday.

“This is top of the list, the greatest win,” Werner said after becoming the first non-Illinois resident to win a CDGA-sponsored amateur championship since 1954. “It's just a great venue to play at and tournament to be in.”

Quarterfinals
Medalist Tom DeStefani (Village Links of Glen Ellyn) withstood a late charge by Dan Roan (Cog Hill G&CC) to advance to the semifinals in 19 holes Wednesday morning. In the bottom half of the bracket, 15th-seeded John Finnin (Olympia Fields CC), who survived a playoff to make match play, defeated Mark Hannon (Bolingbrook GC) 2 up. Finnin will face the third-seed Tim Sheppard (Lick Creek GC), who rolled to a 6-and-4 victory over Jim Krol (Olympia Fields CC).

Day 1: Monday, May 15

CHICAGO - Tom DeStefani (Village Links of Glen Ellyn) was the only golfer in red numbers on Monday, earning medalist honors and the top-seed for match play in the 16th CDGA Senior Amateur Championship at Ridge Country Club. A trio of birdies led DeStefani to a 1-under 69 and his third match play appearance in the last five CDGA Senior Ams.

Philip Kenny (Bob O'Link GC) shot an even-par 70 to secure the second seed.

Among those making match play were defending runner-up Tim Sheppard (Lick Creek) with a 73 and WGN-TV sports anchor Dan Roan (Cog Hill G&CC) with a 76. Additionally, former winner Dirk Anderson (Merit Club) was among those players making it out of a 9-for-6 playoff for the final six spots. Defending champion Vance Antoniou (Wynstone GC) was one of the players failing to advance out of the playoff, which was comprised of golfers shooting 77 in qualifying.

The Round of 16 in match play will begin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, with DeStefani slated to face 16th-seed Mike Martin (CDGA Member's Club).
