Day 4: Thursday, August 10
RAMSEY AND SLUTZKY FEND OFF ACES AND CHALLENGERS TO WIN CDGA FOUR-BALL
NORTH BARRINGTON, Ill. - The only time John Ramsey and Chadd Slutzky trailed during the 2nd CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship at The Club at Wynstone was after stroke play qualifying—where they came up one shot short of medalist honors. As the No. 2 seed, not even a pair of aces could stop them as they never trailed in 63 holes of match play, defeating John Ehrgott and Rick LeHew 3 and 2 in the championship match Thursday morning.
“I had a lot of fun. It was a good week, Wynstone is fantastic,” Ramsey said following the victory. “Chadd is maybe the best partner there is. It's not hard playing with Chadd.”
FIELD OF EIGHT WHITTLED TO TWO AFTER WEDNESDAY'S MATCHES
NORTH BARRINGTON, Ill. - A pair of victories from the duos of John Ehrgott (Mt. Hawley CC) / Rick LeHew (Mt.
Hawley CC) and John Ramsey (North Shore CC) / Chadd Slutzky (Grove CC) on Wednesday set the stage for Thursday's championship match at The Club at Wynstone.
In the top half of the bracket, the 2016 runner-up team of Ehrgott/LeHew won three of the first seven holes, then held serve after dropping the 10th hole to earn a 2-and-1 victory over Paul Dagys (Mistwood GC) and Jack Korzon (Mistwood GC).
In the other semifinal, Ramsey/Slutzky sprinted out to a 2-up lead at the turn, but Rich Balla (St. Charles CC) and Grant Goltz (Kishwaukee CC) made it interesting down the stretch. Goltz aced the 205-yard 11th hole with a 4-iron to tighten the match and Balla had an opportunity to level the match at the 17th, but lipped out his putt. On the 18th, Goltz nearly chipped in from the side of the green to extend the match, but Ramsey drained a 15-footer to seal a 1-up victory.
The championship match on Thursday will feature a trio of Illinois State Mid-Amateur champions, with Ehrgott, a two-time champ and LeHew, the 2004 champ, facing off against Ramsay and Slutzky, who won the 2015 State Mid-Am. The match will begin at 8 a.m. at The Club at Wynstone.
Two matches were settled early, while two went down to the wire in the 2nd CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship quarterfinals Wednesday morning at The Club at Wynstone.
Last year's runner-up duo of John Ehrgott and Rick LeHew outlasted Drew Eaton and Jackson Wetherbee, as a birdie on the second playoff hole by LeHew earned a semifinal spot. They will take on Paul Dagys and Jack Korzon, who bested Joseph Schmidt and Ron Waytula 3 and 2, in the semis.
On the other half of the bracket, Rich Balla and Grant Goltz broke a deadlock against Michael Fastert and Glenn Przybylski on 17 before closing out the victory on 18. Their semifinal opponents will be John Ramsey and Chadd Slutzky, who ousted Brian Hickey and Ryan Neill in the quarterfinals, 5 and 4.

DYNAMIC DUOS SEEK GLORY AT 2ND CDGA AMATEUR FOUR-BALL
LEMONT, Ill. - After a popular debut in 2016, the CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship returns for its second go-around in 2017, Aug. 7-10 at the newly-minted Club at Wynstone. A total of 37 teams advanced to the Championship via qualifying and will contest 18 holes on Monday, with the low 16 duos advancing to the match play bracket, which begins on Tuesday. The quarterfinal and semifinal matches are slated for Wednesday, with the championship match on Thursday.
New to the CDGA championship slate in 2016, the CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship is a team match play event. Two-person teams begin the Championship with 18 holes of stroke play on the Monday of the event before the low 16 teams are seeded into a match play bracket. Both team members play their own ball throughout, with the lowest score on each hole counting. The duo of Michael Natale (Indian Head Park) and Steve Sawtell (Northfield) prevailed in the inaugural event at Eagle Brook Country Club. (2016 Recap)
