TOP DOG: GREG BAUMAN BESTS FIELD TO WIN ILLINOIS STATE MID-AMATEUR
HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. - It was 18 hours of waiting, but what the Bauman brothers hoped after Riley had finished his second round as the leader moments before a lightning delay on Monday came to fruition after the completion of the second round on Tuesday morning: a final round group involving both brothers. Coming into the final round with a one-shot deficit, Greg, the elder brother, held serve in the final round with an even-par 72 to win the 25th Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship by four shots at Exmoor Country Club. It was Greg Bauman's first victory in a state championship, coming on the heels of a top-10 finish at the Illinois Open Championship.
“This is my best win in a while,” Greg Bauman said following the victory. “It's always nice to get a victory against a pretty good field.”
ROUND 1 COMPLETED, ROUND 2 SUSPENDED MONDAY AT EXMOOR
HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. - After the completion of Round 1 of the 25th Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship Monday at Exmoor Country Club, a lightning delay at 4:41 p.m. led to the suspension of Round 2. Nine players finished the second round, leaving the rest of the field to complete Round 2 starting at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. The low 35 and ties after the second round will advance to the final 18-hole round later in the day.
Among those who finished 36 holes was Riley Bauman (Crystal Lake), who followed up an opening-round 72 with a 3-under 69 in Round 2 to surge into the lead. Tied atop the leaderboard with Bauman is his brother Greg Bauman (Chicago), who began the day with a 3-under 69 in Round 1 and is currently even-par through 12 in the second round.
One stroke behind the Bauman brothers is John Ehrgott (Edwards), who was the morning co-leader after an opening-round 69. He'll continue his second 18 on the 17th hole, 1-over par for the round and 2-under overall. Andrew Price (Lake Bluff), the 2014 champion, is in third at 1-under after rounds of 72 and 71. Defending champion Todd Mitchell (Bloomington) is 1-over par overall through 13 holes of his second round, tied for sixth.

The Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2017. The event, which is conducted annually by the Chicago District Golf Association, features the state's best golfers 25 and older. It began in 1993 when it was won by Tom Studer. Currently, the championship is 54 holes, with the entire field playing 36 holes the first day and the low 35 and ties playing 18 holes on the final day. Bloomington's Todd Mitchell won the Championship for a record fifth time last summer. (2016 Recap)
