CDGA AMATEURS RECLAIM RADIX CUP WITH 10-8 VICTORY OVER IPGA PROFESSIONALS

RIVER GROVE, Ill. - A team of 12 amateurs from the Chicago District Golf Association topped a squad of 12 professionals from the Illinois PGA, 10-8, Wednesday afternoon in the 56th Radix Cup Matches at Oak Park Country Club.

Created in 1962 by the late Harry Radix, a former CDGA president, member of the National PGA advisory committee and member of Oak Park Country Club, the Matches are held annually to display the camaraderie present between the state's top golfers.

“This is one of the great events in the state of Illinois,” Tim Sheppard of the CDGA team said. “We get to play the best amateurs against the best professionals at a phenomenal facility. The golf course is immaculate, the fairways are second-to-none and the greens are just pure. It's a blast on a nice day like this.”

“It is an honor to host the 56th Radix Cup Matches and it's a tribute to Harry Radix, who was a true ambassador to the game of golf,” added Frank Bruno, head PGA professional at Oak Park Country Club. “The membership of the club and heritage committee has really embraced this tournament. It was a great day for golf.”

RIVER GROVE, Ill. - A lot has changed since 1962, the time of JFK, The Beatles and bell bottoms, but one thing has endured to 2017: the game of golf's camaraderie, principles of honor and integrity and the bonds the game brings to its competitors. Those tenets will ever be on display again on Wednesday, June 7, as a team of 12 amateur golfers from the Chicago District Golf Association face off against a dozen of the state's best professional golfers representing the Illinois PGA in the 56th edition of the Radix Cup matches at Oak Park Country Club.

The matches, annually contested in honor of Harry Radix, a former CDGA president and former member of the National PGA advisory committee, celebrate the game and those who play it both professionally and recreationally. Radix, who passed in 1965, was a member of Oak Park and founded the matches in 1962. Since his death, the CDGA and IPGA have jointly conducted the event, with the winning team presented the Radix Cup.

The IPGA Professional team owns 35-18-2 all-time lead in the series. However, since the turn of the century, the CDGA holds a 9-8 advantage, with neither side winning more than two in a row since the IPGA's 7-0-1 run between 1991 and 1998.

The professional side took an 11-7 victory in 2016 in the three-point Nassau format.
