KAY CRUISES TO TITLE IN SENIOR AMATEUR DEBUT

ITASCA, Ill. - Prior to competing in the 17th CDGA Senior Amateur Championship, it had been roughly three decades since Brad Kay (Arlington Heights / Ivanhoe Club) last played Itasca Country Club.

“I totally forgot [the layout],” Kay admitted.

He won't forget it any time soon, as the Arlington Heights native hoisted the Charles Morgan Auld Cup following his 4-and-3 victory over Ted Pecora (Winnetka / Bob O'Link GC) in Thursday's championship match. Playing in his first senior amateur event since becoming eligible by turning 55 in January, Kay was dominant throughout the week, never trailing in any of his four matches.

“It's fun to play against guys who are the same age, same style,” Kay said of making his senior debut.

“I had a few good days in a row, which is great,” he added.

CDGA SENIOR AM FINAL FOUR SET FOR THURSDAY AT ITASCA

ITASCA, Ill. - Grabbing an early lead proved to be a key recipe for success on Tuesday at Itasca Country Club, as the quarterfinal matches of the 17th CDGA Senior Amateur Championship saw each winner advance after taking an initial advantage. The Final Four will return to the club on Thursday morning to compete in the semifinal matches, before the final in the afternoon.

The first duel saw top-seeded Tim Sheppard (East Peoria / Lick Creek GC) defeat Steven Jacobs (Highland Park / Pine Meadow GC), the ninth seed, in 20 holes after Sheppard almost relinquished the large lead he held during the match. Sheppard, the runner-up in the 2016 CDGA Senior Amateur Championship at The Club at Wynstone, built a 4-up advantage on the front nine, before Jacobs moved his deficit to 1-down with a birdie on No. 16. Jacobs then acted on a Sheppard wayward tee shot by getting up-and-down for par on No. 18 to send the match to extra holes. Sheppard righted the ship on No. 20 with a birdie on the par 4 to advance.

Awaiting Sheppard in the semifinals is Ted Pecora (Winnetka / Bob O'Link GC), the No. 13 seed, who withstood three-time CDGA Senior Amateur champion Tom Miler (Kewanee / Kewanee Dunes GC), 1-up. Like Sheppard, Pecora built his own 4-up lead at the turn, before it was dwindled to one after a Miler birdie on the par-5 16th. With both players on the green on No. 18, Miler barely missed his birdie opportunity to push the match to extra holes. Pecora's semifinal appearance will mark his best finish in the event, topping his quarterfinal appearance in 2015 and 2016.

Reigning Illinois State Senior Amateur Champion Tom Kearfott (El Paso / El Paso GC) bested Mike Karney (Crystal Lake / Crystal Lake CC), 5 and 3. By No. 6, Kearfott held a 3-up lead and capped off the match with a birdie on the par-4 15th. Kearfott, the No. 10 seed, makes it to the semifinals after qualifying for match play for the first time in his three attempts in the event. A Kearfott and Sheppard meeting in the final could pit the 2016 CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball champions against one another for the Charles Morgan Auld Cup.

Rounding out the Final Four is Brad Kay (Arlington Heights / Ivanhoe Club), who defeated Tom Fox (Palos Heights / Beverly CC), 2 and 1. Kay, the sixth seed, built a 2-up advantage for a majority of the match after a par on the par-4 7th. Fox, the third seed, won No. 14, a par 4, with a birdie, but was ultimately unable to overcome the deficit. A Kay birdie on No. 16 and a halve on No. 17 sealed his trip the semifinals in his first CDGA Senior Amateur appearance.

To avoid conflict with U.S. Senior Amateur qualifying Wednesday, the semifinals will tee off on Thursday morning starting at 8 a.m. The final will immediately follow in the afternoon.

EIGHT ADVANCE ON FIRST DAY OF CDGA SENIOR

ITASCA, Ill. - The 83-golfer field of the 17th CDGA Senior Amateur Championship was whittled down to eight Monday at Itasca Country Club. The low 16 advanced to match play following an 18-hole stroke-play round in the morning, before the first round of matches took place in the afternoon.

Tim Sheppard (East Peoria / Lick Creek GC) earned the top seed with a 2-under 70 in the morning before disposing of Daniel Dolan (Lake Forest / Bob O'Link GC) in the Round of 16, 5 and 3. Awaiting Sheppard in the quarterfinals is Steven Jacobs (Highland Park / Pine Meadow GC), who eliminated defending champion and reigning CDGA Senior Player of the Year Terry Werner (Dyer, Ind. / Briar Ridge CC), 1 up.

Three-time CDGA Senior champion Tom Miler (Kewanee / Kewanee Dunes GC) made the quarterfinals for the first time since 2015 with a 4-and-3 victory over Mike Martin (Geneva / Royal Fox CC). Miler is the only past champion of this event still alive, as 2016 victor Vance Antoniou (North Barrington / Butler National GC) fell to Mike Karney (Crystal Lake / Crystal Lake CC), 2 and 1. Tom Kearfott (El Paso / El Paso GC), the 2017 Illinois State Senior Amateur champion, secured a quarterfinal spot by topping Andrew Nathan (Northbrook / Steeple Chase GC) 5 and 4.

The quarterfinal matches are slated to begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Itasca. To avoid conflicts with U.S. Senior Amateur qualifying, no matches will be held on Wednesday, setting the stage for the semifinals and championship match on Thursday.
