PERKINS WITHSTANDS WALLACE, RAIN TO ATTAIN CDGA AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP GLORY

DEERFIELD, Ill. - David Perkins (East Peoria / Quail Meadows GC) outlasted Trent Wallace (Joliet / Inwood GC) on a rainy Thursday at Briarwood Country Club to earn victory in the 99th CDGA Amateur Championship. Perkins sank a birdie putt on the fifth playoff hole to win the title tilt, which was shortened from 36 to 18 holes due to inclement weather and featured a rain delay that lasted four hours and 15 minutes.

“I'm just truly honored to win the tournament at a course like Briarwood Country Club,” said Perkins, a rising junior at Illinois State University. “It was a great venue all week. To add my name to the list of some of the better golfers in the Chicago area that have come through and won this event, I'm really honored.”

Perkins and Wallace, teammates at ISU, dueled closely throughout the championship match, with no competitor building more than a two-hole advantage. A birdie by Perkins on No. 17 evened the match, which is how it stood until the fifth sudden death hole, the 535-yard par-5 fifth. Playing in a steady rain, Perkins' drive leaked to the right. However, he was able to recover with a lay up and approach shot to 15 feet before curling in the championship-winning putt.

“I was ready to make it, so I just stepped up, trusted what I was doing, and just rolled it like any other putt,” Perkins said.

CDGA AMATEUR TITLE TILT TO FEATURE TWO ILLINOIS STATE UNIVERSITY TEAMMATES

DEERFIELD, Ill. - The championship match of the 99th CDGA Amateur Championship will feature two college teammates, as Illinois State University golfers David Perkins (East Peoria / Quail Meadows GC) and Trent Wallace (Joliet / Inwood GC) won quarterfinal and semifinal matches Wednesday at Briarwood Country Club. Thursday's 36-hole championship match between the two Redbirds will tee off at 8 a.m.

Wallace is a two-time individual Missouri Valley Conference champion for the Redbirds and is entering his senior season, while Perkins will be a junior. Perkins, a MVC Scholar-Athlete Team selection in 2018, is looking forward to the opportunity to compete against a teammate and friend.

"It's going to be more fun than you might think,” Perkins said. “We'll stay pretty on top of the match and might not talk as much, but it will definitely be fun. It will be competitive. We'll have a good time with it and give whoever loses a hard time."

TOP-SEEDED SLUTZKY WINS MARATHON TO JOIN SEVEN OTHERS IN CDGA AM QUARTERFINALS

DEERFIELD, Ill. - The first CDGA Amateur Round of 16 match to tee off was the last one to finish, as top-seeded Chadd Slutzky (Deer Park / The Grove CC) needed 23 holes to defeat Benjamin Johnson (Downers Grove / Naperville CC) Tuesday at Briarwood Country Club.

The stroke play medalist was defeated in the first round of match play in each of the last two CDGA Amateurs, with a bogey by Slutzky on 16 to go 1 down putting him in danger of joining that group. However, a birdie by Slutzky on 18 sent the match to extra holes, where the duo traded pars until the par-5 5th hole. Slutzky put his second shot to within 10 feet, leading Johnson to concede the eagle after tallying a par.

Slutzky's opponent in Wednesday morning's quarterfinals will be Kyle Slattery (Rockford / The Mauh Nah Tee See Club), who defeated Russell Matos (Lombard / Village Links of Glen Ellyn) to reach the quarterfinals for the third straight year.

Michael Fastert (Des Plaines / Sanctuary GC), the 2017 runner up, fell to 2017 medalist Trent Wallace (Joliet / Inwood GC), 2 and 1. Andrew Price (Lake Bluff / Conway Farms GC), the 2016 CDGA Am winner, rallied from 2 down through 13 by winning three of the last five holes to defeat Eric Wessel (DeKalb / Kishwaukee CC) 1 up.

The quarterfinals will begin Wednesday at 8 a.m., with the semifinals teeing off in the afternoon. The 36-hole championship match is slated for Thursday.

SLUTZKY MEDALIST, MATCH PLAY SET AT 99th CDGA AMATEUR

DEERFIELD, Ill. - Thirty-six holes of stroke play whittled the 75-golfer CDGA Amateur field down to 16 Monday at Briarwood Country Club. Chadd Slutzky (Deer Park / The Grove CC) fired rounds of 66 and 68 to earn medalist honors at 8-under overall and will enter Tuesday's first round of match play as the top seed.

Slutzky offset two bogeys with seven birdies to card a 5-under 66 in the morning, the lowest round of the day. Slutzky's stellar golf continued in the afternoon, as he went bogey-free until the 18th en route to a 3-under 68. Slutzky has three victories in Illinois State and CDGA championships, but has yet to win a match in this event.

His opponent in Tuesday's first round will be Benjamin Johnson (Downers Grove / Naperville CC), who birdied the second playoff hole to advance by Austin Freeman (DeKalb / River Heights GC).

Trent Wallace (Joliet / Inwood GC), who was last year's CDGA Amateur medalist before losing in the first round of matches, posted two rounds of 69 to earn the No. 2 seed at 4-under overall. Eric Wessel (DeKalb / Kishwaukee CC) and David Perkins (East Peoria / Quail Meadows GC) both finished at 2-under, with Michael Cascino (Palos Park / Olympia Fields CC) rounding out the group in red numbers at 1-under.

Andrew Price (Lake Bluff / Conway Farms GC), the 2016 CDGA Amateur champion, finished 2-over to earn the No. 14 seed. Last year's CDGA Amateur runner up, Michael Fastert (Des Plaines / Sanctuary GC), also finished 2-over and will be the No. 15 seed. Jordan Fahel (Peoria / Mt. Hawley CC), the 2014 CDGA Amateur champion, did not make the cut.

The Round of 16 will begin at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The quarterfinals and semifinals will take place on Wednesday, with the 36-hole championship match slated for Thursday.
