CLARENDON HILLS, Ill. – Three years ago at Bowes Creek Country Club, John Ehrgott (Edwards / Mt. Hawley CC) defeated Blake Johnson (Winnetka / The Glen Club) in the quarterfinals en route to victory at the inaugural CDGA Mid-Amateur Championship. On Thursday, they’ll square off for the title, as both individuals emerged victorious in quarterfinal and semifinal matches Wednesday at Hinsdale Golf Club.
“Oh, Blake wants revenge,” Ehrgott said with a chuckle. “I remember it was a really good match. It was real back-and-forth.”
Ehrgott, who survived a 12-for-3 playoff on Tuesday to make match play, dispatched of K.C. Matkaitis (Oak Lawn / Calumet CC) 2 and 1 in the morning quarterfinals before besting Grant Goltz (DeKalb / Kishwaukee CC) 1 up in the afternoon. Ehrgott, who also has 2007 and 2009 Illinois State Mid-Amateur crowns to his name in addition to the 2015 CDGA Mid-Am, was 1 down to Goltz through 15 holes. However, Ehrgott bounced back by winning No. 16 with a bogey and No. 17 with a birdie to assume control of the match.
Johnson lost the first two holes of his quarterfinal match against Mike King (La Grange / CDGA Member’s Club) before rebounding to win 3 and 2. Against John Wright (Aurora / Oak Brook GC) in the semifinals, Johnson birdied the final two holes to win what was a deadlocked match through 16, 2 up. Johnson finished runner up in the 2014 CDGA Amateur championship, also contested at Hinsdale Golf Club.
“I love the distance of the course [6,587 yards]. It’s not too long. I’m an old guy and don’t hit it very far,” joked the 49-year-old.
Ehrgott and Johnson will tee off at 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning. The event was initially scheduled to conclude Wednesday, but rain washed out play on Monday and pushed the schedule back a day.
