RIVER GROVE, Ill. - A team of 12 amateurs from the Chicago District Golf Association topped a squad of 12 professionals from the Illinois PGA, 10-8, Wednesday afternoon in the 56th Radix Cup Matches at Oak Park Country Club.
Created in 1962 by the late Harry Radix, a former CDGA president, member of the National PGA advisory committee and member of Oak Park Country Club, the Matches are held annually to display the camaraderie present between the state’s top golfers.
“This is one of the great events in the state of Illinois,” Tim Sheppard of the CDGA team said. “We get to play the best amateurs against the best professionals at a phenomenal facility. The golf course is immaculate, the fairways are second-to-none and the greens are just pure. It’s a blast on a nice day like this.”
“It is an honor to host the 56th Radix Cup Matches and it’s a tribute to Harry Radix, who was a true ambassador to the game of golf,” added Frank Bruno, head PGA professional at Oak Park Country Club. “The membership of the club and heritage committee has really embraced this tournament. It was a great day for golf.”
In the first match, both the CDGA’s Raymond Knoll/Paul Schlimm Jr. and the IPGA’s Kyle Bauer/Adam Schumacher earned 1.5 points for their respective teams. Second out of the gate was the CDGA’s Sheppard and Dave Ryan against Bruno and Brian Carroll of the IPGA. After the IPGA duo took the Out match, 1 up, Ryan and Sheppard rebounded on the back nine. The match culminated with a 10-foot birdie putt by Sheppard on 18 to clinch both the In and Overall matches for the CDGA squad.
“We needed two points, so I was happy we didn’t split,” Sheppard said. “I needed to make that putt.”
The IPGA bounced back in the third match, where Chris Green/Brian Janty took 2.5 points out of 3 from the CDGA’s Vance Antoniou/Bob Youman. However, the next two matches sealed the return of the Radix Cup to the CDGA, as the pairings of Kyle Nathan/Chadd Slutzky and Charlie Netzel/Kyle Slattery both earned a full three points each from Garrett Chaussard/Mike Small and Travis Johns/Matt Slowinski of the IPGA.
“It was a great match, a lot of good golf and I’m just glad we came out on top,” Slutzky said.
“It was a fun day out there with [Small] even though we didn’t play great,” said Chaussard, who played for Small at the University of Illinois. “They just played better and beat us.”
The IPGA’s only sweep of the day came from the final group, where Brian Brodell and Frank Hohenadel, both PGA professionals at Mistwood Golf Club, took all three points from the CDGA’s Andy Johnson and Steve Sawtell.
“It was a lot of fun to partner with Brian,” Hohenadel said. “We’ve always had a good rapport. We’ve had some good matches as opponents and it’s always fun to team up with someone you work with. It’s my first season at Mistwood so I actually haven’t played a ton with him, so it was good to build that relationship in a fun atmosphere like this.”
The CDGA’s victory brings the all-time series record to 35-19-2 in favor of the IPGA. However, the CDGA has won 10 of the 18 Radix Cup Matches contested in the 2000s, including two of the last three.
