GLEN ELLYN, Ill. – Despite high winds and intense heat, nine players sit under par following Monday’s first two rounds of the 26th Illinois State Mid-Amateur Championship at Glen Oak Country Club. Zach Jecklin (Chicago / The Glen Club) leads at 4-under par overall, with a trio of others one stroke back entering Tuesday’s final round.
Jecklin’s 6-under 66 in the morning was the lowest round carded by the 72-golfer field. The 32-year-old tallied eight birdies, including a stretch of three-straight from his 13th through 15th holes. Despite notching a 2-over 74 in the afternoon, which was marred by a double bogey on the par-3 16th, the State Mid-Am rookie is pleased with the position he is in following the first day of competition.
“The first round was a lot more fun than the second,” Jecklin said. “I made about a million feet of putts.
“I’m certainly happy with 4-under as the total,” Jecklin added. “I would have preferred a little something lower on the second 18, but all-in-all, I’m happy with where I stand. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”
Jecklin’s playing partners for the final 18 holes will be Matt Considine (Chicago / Beverly CC) and 2014 Illinois State Mid-Amateur winner Andrew Price (Lake Bluff / Conway Farms GC), who both sit T2 at 3-under overall alongside and Logan Stauffer (Bloomington / Lakeside CC). Considine, Price and Stauffer all avoided over-par rounds on the day, particularly impressive considering wind gusts that reached upwards of 25 miles per hour.
“The wind totally changes this course,” Considine said. “Even on the greens today, once it really started blowing in the afternoon, you’d have to take wind in to consideration.”
Five-time State Mid-Am winner Todd Mitchell (Bloomington / Crestwicke CC) sits three shots back at 1-under overall after rounds of 70 and 73. Defending champion Greg Bauman (Chicago / Biltmore CC) and two-time State Mid-Am victor John Ehrgott (Edwards / Mt. Hawley CC) are T15 at 2-over.
Two competitors notched aces on the day, each on a different hole. Thomas Brennan (Rochelle / Fairways GC) holed out his tee shot on the 200-yard third for an ace. He’s even par overall, four shots behind Jecklin. Larry Elbaum (Highland Park / Briarwood CC) carded a hole in one on the 157-yard sixth hole. Elbaum did not make the cut.
Final round play begins at 8 a.m., with the final trio of Jecklin, Considine and Price teeing off at 9:39 a.m.
