IPGA PROFESSIONALS RETAIN WEATHER-ABBREVIATED RADIX CUP

RIVER GROVE, Ill. - It’s rare that an event with 64 years of history experiences a first.

That’s what happened in Thursday’s Radix Cup Matches at Oak Park Country Club, as the team of Illinois PGA Professionals claimed the first weather-shortened iteration in event history, 3.5-2.5 over the CDGA Amateurs.

Storms throughout the afternoon necessitated three restarts before every competitor had teed off. Play eventually began, with all six of the Nassau matches getting through at least nine holes before another deluge necessitated the stoppage of play for the day. It was determined to utilize the scores from the Out matches to determine the victory, which resulted in a third-consecutive IPGA triumph.

“It was fun to win the bragging rights,” said Brian Carroll (The Hawk CC), who teamed with Kevin Flack (The Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Club) to claim a point. You always come here wanting to win. It was a great day. We always want to walk out with the trophy and just keep that in our hands.”

The event is contested annually in honor of former Oak Park member and CDGA President Harry Radix. It is meant to embody the camaraderie and spirit of competitive golf, which Andy Mickelson (Mistwood GC) has experienced on both sides.

“I’ve done this both as an amateur and a professional over the last 25 years, in different times of my golf life,” Mickelson, who won his match alongside Frank Hohenadel (Mistwood GC), said. “It's just a really fun day to be a part of. It’s a small, special group. Best teams and the best pros.”

The victory brings the IPGA’s all-time record to 40-22-2.

The Central Illinois duo of Brien Davis (WeaverRidge GC) and Brandon Holtz (Crestwicke CC) led the way for the Amateur side, winning their match against Chris French (Aldeen GC) and Mike Troy (Zigfield Troy). Meeting for the first time, Davis and Holtz forged a quick chemistry, surging to a 4-up lead through six holes with a birdie barrage.

“We birdied a lot of holes,” Davis said. “A lot a lot of holes.”

Holtz, the reigning U.S. Mid-Amateur champion who played in the Masters in April, enjoyed making his Radix Cup debut in advance of leaving on Saturday to compete in the U.S. Open.

“It was great - the golf course was awesome,” Holtz said.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Holtz added. “It was fun, the guys we played were great. It was a fun atmosphere.”

Up next on the CDGA Championship Schedule is the 106th CDGA Amateur Championship, slated for June 22-25 at North Shore Country Club. The Illinois Senior Open, June 15-16 at Hawthorn Woods Country Club, awaits on the professional circuit.
