BIRDIES RULE AT EAGLE BROOK AS NATALE & SAWTELL CLAIM MAIDEN CDGA FOUR-BALL

GENEVA, Ill. --
The duo of Michael Natale and Steve Sawtell claimed the inaugural CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship Thursday at Eagle Brook Country Club with a 1-up victory over John Ehrgott and Rick LeHew. Sawtell, a Northfield native and two-time CDGA Amateur champ, and Natale of Indian Head Park were the fourth seed following stroke play qualifying on Monday, before advancing through the match play bracket.

“It means a lot to win,” Sawtell said. “It’s a great new event; it’s been seven years since I won my last CDGA (Am). It’s a lot of fun and a good partner to share it with.”

Day 3: Wednesday, Aug. 3

The duos of Michael Natale / Steve Sawtell and John Ehrgott / Rick LeHew won CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship quarterfinal and semifinal matches Wednesday at Eagle Brook Country Club. The teams will square off in Thursday’s 18-hole final match at noon.

Natale and Sawtell dispatched of Michael Hultquist / Nick Lavezzorio in the quarterfinals, 3 and 2, before ousting the top-seeded pair of Jason Chobar / Paul Schlimm, Jr. in the semifinal, 2 up. The afternoon match was all square through 12 before Sawtell birdied 13 to move his team 1 up. Chobar and Schlimm maintained the one-hole deficit until 18, when two errant tee shots resulted in Natale and Sawtell clinching the match with pars.

Ehrgott and LeHew never trailed in either match en route to the final. They cruised by Dominic Cascino / Michael Cascino in the morning quarterfinal, 7 and 6, before receiving a stiffer test from John Ramsey / Chadd Slutzky in the afternoon. A Ramsey birdie on 17 brought the match all square for the first time since hole number one, but LeHew drained a 9-foot birdie putt on 18 for the win. (Match Play Bracket / Facebook Photo Gallery )
