DEERFIELD, Ill. – The championship match of the 99th CDGA Amateur Championship will feature two college teammates, as Illinois State University golfers David Perkins (East Peoria / Quail Meadows GC) and Trent Wallace (Joliet / Inwood GC) won quarterfinal and semifinal matches Wednesday at Briarwood Country Club. Thursday’s 36-hole championship match between the two Redbirds will tee off at 8 a.m.
Wallace is a two-time individual Missouri Valley Conference champion for the Redbirds and is entering his senior season, while Perkins will be a junior. Perkins, a MVC Scholar-Athlete Team selection in 2018, is looking forward to the opportunity to compete against a teammate and friend.
“It’s going to be more fun than you might think,” Perkins said. “We’ll stay pretty on top of the match and might not talk as much, but it will definitely be fun. It will be competitive. We’ll have a good time with it and give whoever loses a hard time.”
Perkins needed just 30 holes to win his two matches on Wednesday and never trailed in either. He closed out Grant Milling (Bloomington / Weibring GC at ISU) by taking the final four holes to win 6 and 4 in the quarterfinals before tallying four birdies and an eagle in his semifinal victory against Kyle Slattery (Rockford / The Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Club).
“My confidence level is as high as it could be right now,” Perkins said.
Wallace was similarly proficient in his two triumphs on Wednesday. He never trailed against Michael Mounce (El Paso / El Paso GC) en route to a 2-up victory in the morning before closing out Drew Shepherd (Hinsdale / Ruth Lake CC) on No. 16 to win 3 and 2 in the semifinals.
Slattery ousted medalist Chadd Slutzky (Deer Park / The Grove CC) in the quarterfinals by dropping a birdie putt on 18 to win 1 up. Shepherd bested 2016 CDGA Amateur champion Andrew Price (Lake Bluff / Conway Farms GC) 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals before falling to Wallace.
