DYNASTIC DUO, SLUTZKY AND RAMSEY, WINS THIRD CDGA AMATEUR FOUR-BALL TITLE AT RIDGEMOOR | |
Wednesday, August 10, 2022 - CHICAGO, Ill. - Already donning two CDGA Amateur Four-Ball trophies on their mantles ahead of the event's seventh iteration in 2022, Chadd Slutzky (Deer Park / Royal Fox CC) and John Ramsey (Glenview / Glenview Park GC) continued their dynastic run in the CDGA's premier team championship with a third title. This time, the final victory came over 2019 champions, and brothers, Tommy Dunsire (Naperville / Medinah CC) and Scott Dunsire, Jr. (Warrenville / Medinah CC) Wednesday afternoon at Ridgemoor Country Club. The win pushes the duo ahead of 2022 Round-of-16 participants, Steve Sawtell (Northfield / Merit Club) and Michael Natale (Burr Ridge / Edgewood Valley CC), who won in 2016 and 2018, for the most in the event's history. "It's amazing," said Slutzky of his team's triumph in the 7th CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship. "To be the first three-time winners of this event really means a ton. We're really excited about the victory – we had a lot of tough matches that we somehow came out on top of after a long fight, and it's amazing." "This is one of the events that we look forward to all year," added Ramsey. "It's fun to come out on top of it and to be the first three-time champ is fantastic." Those matches materialized following a 4-under 68 in Monday's stroke-play round to earn the duo the No. 4 seed. After besting 2019 CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball champions Brad Kay (Arlington Heights / Ivanhoe Club) and Brien Gerber (Bolingbrook / Bolingbrook GC), 3 and 2, in the Round of 16 on Tuesday morning, Slutzky and Ramsey disposed of another brotherly duo in Michael (Palos Park / Olympia Fields CC) and Dominic Cascino (Palos Park / Olympia Fields CC), 1 up, in Tuesday afternoon's Quarterfinals to complete their second day of play. The duo's attention then turned to a pair of fellow mid-amateurs in Michael Fastert (Wheeling / Sanctuary GC) and Graham O'Connor-Brooks (Waukegan / Glen Flora CC) in Wednesday morning's Semifinal round. Gaining an early 4-up lead through just five holes, Slutzky and Ramsey made the turn towards the clubhouse with a commanding 3-up advantage and never turned back. A pair of victories on Nos. 13 and 14 ended the match at 5 and 4. The Dunsires, who received the event's No. 2 seed, earned 2-and-1 and 1-up victories on Tuesday to advance to the Semifinals. Awaiting the two were Jack Paeglow (Dekalb / Kishwaukee CC) and Grant Goltz (Dekalb / Black Sheep GC), who were making their third-consecutive trip to the Quarterfinals or beyond. Both pairs began their round by making three-consecutive birdies to keep the match tied, before a bogey at the par-3 fourth had the brothers playing from behind. Not for long, however, as the Dunsires fired off birdie wins on Nos. 7, 9, 10, 11 and 15 to secure a 4-and-3 triumph. Onto the Finals - a place both tandems have become quite familiar with. An early 2-up lead, thanks to a pair of opening birdies, quickly diminished for Slutzky and Ramsey, as the Dunsires carded a couple of birdies of their own on Nos. 4 and 6 to send the Championship to the turn one final time just the way it started - anyone's game. An 18-foot birdie putt rolled in for Tommy, the younger of the Dunsire duo, at No. 10, but was not enough, as Slutzky calmed his nerves to clean up his three-foot eagle try. Advantage Slutzky / Ramsey. "The eagle there (at No. 10) was huge," said Slutzky. "Tommy still had 18 feet left for birdie and drained it, and I was in there three feet for eagle, so he made me work at it, but I made that putt and that was big." Capitalizing on the Dunsire pair's lone bogey of the match at No. 12 pushed the eventual champions' lead to 2 up after overcoming some self-inflicted adversity a hole prior."I was sitting pretty on No. 11, had 155 or 160 (yards) left, and I chunked it into the water," said Slutzky following the win, "but Ramsey picked me up and made a birdie after getting up-and-down from like 60 (yards). That's just how this works. It was a great match, a lot of birdies going on, and we were just lucky to come out on top."
