CDGA, FOLDS OF HONOR PARTNER TO EXPAND VETERAN IMPACT
Thursday, May 11, 2023 - LEMONT, Ill. - The Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA) has partnered with the Folds of Honor Foundation, an organization that provides life-changing scholarships to the spouses and children of fallen or disabled US service members and first responders, carrying on a longstanding tradition of utilizing golf to enhance the lives of our nation's heroes.
Folds of Honor has awarded approximately 44,000 educational scholarships since its founding in 2007, but increasing demand in recent years led to an unmet need in the Chicago District. The CDGA and CDGA Foundation will help close this gap by funding five Folds of Honor scholarships, a contribution totaling $25,000, allowing more dependents of veterans and first responders to experience life-changing education. "Our charitable work officially dates back to 1944, when we created putting greens at local VA hospitals to assist World War II veterans," said CDGA Executive Director Robert Markionni. "For nearly 80 years since, we have continued to prioritize aiding servicemen and women through the inherent benefits and values of golf. Folds of Honor shares a similar vision and values, leading to a natural partnership that we are incredibly excited about." Today, the CDGA's work impact on veterans has evolved to include 65 therapeutic clinics for an assortment of veteran populations held in conjunction with service provider RevelationGolf, in addition to nine Blind Veterans Golf Outings put on in tandem with the Hines VA Hospital's Central Blind Rehabilitation Center. In total, more than 800 veterans are expected to participate in CDGA Outreach Programs in 2023. Enhancing the synergy between both organizations is Folds of Honor's association with the game of golf. The organization's CEO and founder, Lt Col Dan Rooney, is a Class A Member of the PGA. In conjunction with Jack Nicklaus, Rooney recently created American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Michigan, which commemorates the birthplace of Folds of Honor and is golf's most patriotic experience. "Folds of Honor is grateful and proud of our association with the CDGA," said Rooney. "We believe the partnership will be a force multiplier to the mission and awareness of Folds of Honor and increase scholarship funding to the families of American military and first responders heroes. Together we will meet sacrifice with hope." The application period for Folds of Honor Scholarships recently closed. Evaluation of applicants is under way, with recipients expected to be announced in July.
