WALLACE, SHEPPARD NAMED 2018 CDGA PLAYERS OF THE YEAR

LEMONT, Ill. – Much like their battle in the 100th CDGA Amateur Championship Final at Glen View Club back in June, Jordan Less and David Perkins finished the 2019 championship season where they were after 36 holes - in a tie. Although Less prevailed on the 37th hole on the course, both players earned enough points to share the 2019 CDGA Player of the Year honors. On the senior side, Tim Sheppard added a second-consecutive CDGA Senior Player of Year distinction, following another successful season that featured championship hardware.

Less and Perkins finished the tournament season with 800 points each, making it the first time since the award was first presented in 1993 that two players shared the recognition. Less, a senior at Northern Illinois University and Elmhurst native, earned 350 points with his win in the aforementioned CDGA Amateur Championship, his first victory in a CDGA-administered event. He utilized a steady flatstick in the latter part of the match to stay even with Perkins, the defending champion in the event, before a par on the 37th hole sealed the victory.

Following his title, Less finished in a tie for second place, with Perkins, in the 89th Illinois State Amateur Championship at Cantigny Golf in July. He later made match play in the 4th CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Oak Park Country Club, alongside former NIU teammate Paul Schlimm, and finished in a tie for fourth in the 70th Illinois Open Championship at The Glen Club in August.

Although Perkins, a senior at Illinois State University and East Peoria native, fell in the CDGA Amateur Final, he amassed 275 points in the effort. In the 89th Illinois State Amateur Championship, Perkins got off to quick start in the first two rounds, compiling scores of 68 and 69 to sit at 9-under par and four shots clear of a triumvirate of chasers heading into the third and final round of the weather-shortened championship. He was eventually caught, and passed, by winner Ethan Farnam, concluding with a 3-over par round and a tie for second with Less. The finish garnered Perkins 325 points.

Later in the summer, Perkins teamed up with fellow East Peoria resident, Tim Sheppard, to make match play in the 4th CDGA Amateur Four-Ball Championship, before the duo fell to eventual winners Tommy and Scott Dunsire. Perkins also earned points for advancing past U.S Open Local Qualifying at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club in May and for competing in the U.S. Amateur at Pinehurst Resort after qualifying as an alternate. He also advanced to the 2020 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship following qualifying in August, alongside ISU teammate Daniel Anfield.

While the Player of the Year Honors came down to the wire, and an eventual tie, Tim Sheppard took hold of the Senior Player of the Year standings from the beginning of the season, and never relinquished. His campaign was kick-started by a victory in the 18th CDGA Senior Amateur Championship at Briar Ridge Country Club in May, defeating Doug McCoy in the Final, 5 and 4. With his title, Sheppard became the first person to claim all three CDGA-administered senior championships – the CDGA Senior Amateur, Illinois State Senior Amateur and CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball – and at the time, was the most-recent winner of each.

Sheppard also finished fourth in the 33rd Illinois State Senior Amateur Championship at Westmoreland Country Club, and made match-play in both the 5th CDGA Mid-Amateur Championship at Northmoor Country Club and 4th CDGA Senior Amateur Four-Ball Championship at Calumet Country Club. Additionally, he qualified for and competed in his second-straight U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, where he advanced to the match-play portion at Old Chatham Golf Club in Durham, N.C. He becomes the fifth person to win back-to-back CDGA Senior Player of the Years.

The three players will be recognized at the CDGA Board of Directors meeting in November.
